North Division Internal Medicine Residency: Message from Chief Medical Residents

As residents of the Internal Medicine Program at the North Division of Montefiore Medical Center (previously Our Lady of Mercy), it is our pleasure to share with you what we have gained from this academic training experience.  During our residency, we learned the art of medicine with extensive exposure to a variety of academic, clinical and social scenarios.  This goal is achieved by providing diverse inpatient and outpatient experiences under the supervision of dedicated and highly-skilled clinician-educators who are deeply committed to teaching.

Our philosophy is that the best residency training is a result of professional responsibility and autonomy commensurate with demonstrated competence within a supportive environment.  We work like a family and have a strong belief in team spirit.

We learned to provide the highest level of care by emphasizing Performance Improvement and by establishing effective communication with patients and families.  We are among the first Internal Medicine Residency programs to introduce Performance Improvement as a rotation. The challenge is immense and we rise to it by following the example of our predecessors and mentors.

Using our state-of-the-art conference room with the latest audio/visual technology for grand rounds, morbidity and mortality presentations, morning reports and journal clubs, we are combining our clinical skills with up-to-date medical advances and guidelines. The residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research, and this has resulted in abstracts that have been presented at local and national meetings, some of which have won prestigious awards.

Our graduates are currently pursuing fellowships in several programs in the country including the Mayo Clinic and Baylor College of Medicine.  Many have chosen to continue fellowship training in gastroenterology, geriatrics, nephrology and hematology/oncology at our hospital.  Those who have chosen to enter private practice make a confident and smooth transition.

During your visit, you will experience many aspects of our program, including the inpatient floors, ambulatory clinics, teaching conferences and attending rounds.  But most important, you will interact with the heart and soul of the program, the House Staff.  Inevitably, you may find that you have questions that may not have been addressed during the interview.  If so, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We are proud to become a part of the Montefiore family, as it will enable us to explore a new era of modern medicine.  We feel that upon completion of the program we will be fully prepared to follow our aspirations, whether in internal medicine or in a subspecialty.

We invite you to consider the Internal Medicine Program at the North Division of Montefiore Medical Center to determine if this is indeed the place for you.  Regardless of your decision, we wish you the best in your endeavors.  Once again, welcome.
