Orthodontic Residency Program

The goal of our orthodontic curriculum is to educate well-rounded clinical Orthodontists, capable of integrating the art and science of the specialty, with the ability to handle a diversity of mechano-therapies. The curriculum will develop the diagnostic, treatment planning and biomechanical skills necessary to treat a diverse orthodontic population that includes: children, adults and patients with dentofacial and craniofacial deformities.   

The curriculum includes graduate level biomedical sciences such as: biochemistry, biostatistics, craniofacial growth and development, embryology, genetics, head and neck anatomy, oral histology, pathology and physiology.

Clinical sciences include: adult orthodontics, biomechanical principles, cephalometric radiology, clinical photography, craniofacial deformities, materials science, occlusion/TMJ therapy, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning, orthognathic surgery, implantology, distraction osteogenesis, radiation physics, computer science, diagnostic imaging, practice management and research methodology.

Lectures and laboratory sessions in Edgewise, Tip Edge (Begg), functional and removable appliance design and fabrication supplement the clinical experience, which also includes Bioprogressive, Segmented, Straight Wire, MBT and Functional Orthopedic Techniques.

Seminars on current research and treatment methodology are complemented by regular literature review and journal club sessions. The 36-month orthodontic graduate training program also requires the completion of a research thesis and a publishable paper.

The hospital environment demands a close working relationship with other specialists in the various disciplines of Dentistry and Medicine emphasizing the relationship to Prosthodontics by integrating surgery, implants, and periodontics.

Salary, Housing and Tuition

All incoming Residents are categorized as PGY1, regardless of previous training. First year Residents will receive an approximate salary of $48,750 (Academic Year 2007/2008) plus fringe benefits. Hospital housing is generally available for residents. Tuition is $25,000 per year for each of the 3 residency years.
