Department of Anesthesiology
The Department provides anesthesiology services at two divisions of Montefiore — the Henry and Lucy Moses Division and the Weiler Division. The practice has approximately 50 faculty, encompasses over 30,000 anesthetics; and runs 34 operating rooms, a delivery suite, and a consulting service.
Anesthesiologists at Montefiore are charged with the perioperative medical management of patients who are to be, or who are rendered unconscious and insensible to pain and emotional stress during surgical, obstetrical and certain other medical procedures. The practice also includes the protection of life functions and vital organs (e.g. brain, heart, lungs, kidney, liver) under the stress of anesthetic, surgical and other medical procedures, and the management of problems in pain relief, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, pulmonary care, and critically ill patients in special care units.
The Department is guided by a three-part mission:
- to deliver state-of-the-art anesthesia care to serve the health care needs of the community;
- to provide first-rate education to medical students, residents and colleagues; and
- to develop new knowledge pertinent to the specialty of anesthesiology and the needs of our community.
