Dr. Philip Ozuah Named Chairman of Pediatrics

New York City, NY, (February 5, 2007) -- Philip O. Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., has been named Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Montefiore Medical Center. He also has been named Physician-in-Chief of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore. The appointments were announced jointly by Spencer Foreman, M.D., President of Montefiore, and Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., The Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean of Einstein.

Dr. Ozuah has served as interim chair of pediatrics at Einstein and Montefiore since 2005. A member of the Einstein faculty since 1992, he is also professor of pediatrics and of family and social medicine at the medical school.  Additionally, he has served as vice chairman for clinical and educational affairs of the Department of Pediatrics and director of the residency training program in social pediatrics at Montefiore.

Dr. Ozuah’s research focuses on the effects of environmental exposures on children. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration of the Department of Health and Human Services, and many private foundations. He is widely published, with more than 110 articles in peer-reviewed journals and books, 200 published abstracts and more than 250 presentations at national and international scientific meetings. He serves on the editorial board of the journal Ambulatory Pediatrics and is a reviewer for a variety of pediatric and environmental health journals. In addition, he has served on NIH Special Emphasis Panels on Education and is currently a member of the NIH Study Section of Masters in Clinical Research Training Grants.
 
Dr. Ozuah has received numerous major awards for excellence in teaching. These include the medical school’s Harry Gordon Award for Outstanding Clinical Teaching and the Samuel Rosen Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Clinical Curriculum. He is also the recipient of the Pediatrics Department’s William Obrinsky Award for Excellence in Student Teaching and Lewis M. Fraad Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching. He has been inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society for outstanding achievement in teaching, and, as a faculty member, into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He also has been recognized nationally, receiving the Outstanding Teaching Award of the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and the Ray E. Helfer Award for Innovation in Pediatric Education.

Dr. Ozuah earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan, in Nigeria and his Master’s degree in education from the University of Southern California (USC). He received his Ph.D. degree in educational leadership and administration from the University of Nebraska. He did his pediatric internship and residency at Einstein and Montefiore and a post-doctoral fellowship in medical education at the USC School of Medicine.
Dr. Ozuah is a resident of Chestnut Ridge, NY.
