First in Region Portable Bedside CT Scanner in Operation for Neurosurgery Patients at Montefiore Med

Equipment Will Increase Quality of Care and Safety for Critically Ill Patients,
Allowing Them to Remain in Bed in Intensive Care Units for Radiology Exams

New York City, NY (June 26, 2006) — A new, state-of-the-art portable CT scanner that works right at a patient's bedside is now in operation at Montefiore Medical Center.  It is the first CT scanner of its kind in the region.

"This new technology allows doctors to capture the critical images they need to monitor seriously ill patients without moving them from an intensive or critical care unit," said Stephen Amis, MD, chairman of the Department of Radiology at Montefiore.

"Our patients can undergo CT scans right after very delicate surgeries while they remain in bed under the care of ICU nurses and other specialists," said Dr. Amis.

"For the first time, it will not be necessary to transport critically ill patients to the radiology suite for critical CT scans which are a mainstay of pre- and post-operative care for our neurosurgery patients," said Eugene Flamm, MD, chairman of Montefiore's Department of Neurosurgery.  "This new machine gives Montefiore new capabilities in levels of safety and quality of care we deliver to our patients."

The new multi-slice CT Scanner weighs only about 800 pounds and measures four feet in diameter and two feet deep.  It is easily rolled to the patient's ICU bedside.

Montefiore is establishing new standards in radiation treatment for many cancers. For example, to treat lung cancer we use Image-Guided Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IGRT), which allows unprecedented targeting of a lung tumor without harming surrounding tissue – even when the lungs move as the patient breathes.
