$250 Million Investment in Upgrading Patient Rooms
and New Construction Will Consolidate Specialties for Easy Access to Care
New York City, NY (Dec. 5, 2005) — Montefiore Medical Center is investing in a major construction and renovation initiative that will create new patient rooms, private labor and delivery suites, specialized pediatric operating rooms and new facilities for treating cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other related illnesses by the time the project is completed in late 2006. Montefiore's investment in the new facilities and additional state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment is estimated at more than $250 million.
"This investment will provide our patients with easier access to the best in outpatient specialty care and bring them more privacy and comfort in newly renovated patient rooms should they have to stay in the hospital," said Spencer Foreman, MD, president of Montefiore. "This is another example of Montefiore's commitment to bringing the best in medical care to the people in the communities we serve."
At the Montefiore Medical Park at Poplar Avenue and Jarret Place, a former warehouse known as the Tile Building is being completely renovated and turned into a two-story, 15,000-square-foot Radiation Oncology Center.
"Increasingly cancer has become a more treatable, chronic disease requiring multi-disciplinary teams that can provide care to patients on an outpatient basis," Dr. Foreman said. "Our new radiation oncology facility will combine the very best in multi-disciplinary radiation oncology services with our ambulatory clinical oncology and infusion center in the Montefiore Medical Park."
Another Montefiore project in Morris Park is the complete renovation of a 28,000-square-foot building at 1733 Eastchester Road that will become the Montefiore Cardiovascular and Diabetes Treatment Center, featuring the latest in cardiovascular diagnostic imaging and treatment technology.
"Patients with heart disease or diabetes are often at risk for related illnesses, which means they usually have to 'shop around ' to get all the care they need from different medical offices," Dr. Foreman said. "Montefiore is combining all these related therapeutic specialties and services under one roof to provide a better treatment experience for our patients and their families."
At the Weiler Division, maternity in-patient rooms are being converted to all private rooms and five new state-of-the-art labor and delivery rooms will be established in the existing Labor and Delivery Suite. In addition, the Emergency Department will be expanded to create a more spacious and efficient facility.
At the Moses Division, the MRI facility at East Gun Hill Road is being expanded and the latest in diagnostic imaging technology will be added. The eight-story Northwest Pavilion is being completely renovated to provide patients with new private or double-bed rooms with private baths, and five new specialty pediatric operating rooms are being constructed at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore.
Funding for these projects comes from varied sources including sale of Federal government-backed bonds and internal Montefiore financial backing.
