Clarence and Carl All Giggly and Smiles; Doctors Give Them Extra Secure Head Bandages

New York City, New York (August 20, 2004) – Doctors at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) are taking no chances of a repeat performance by formerly conjoined twin Carl Aguirre who became annoyed with his head bandages yesterday and removed them, twice.  Today, doctors placed extra secure head dressings on both Carl and his brother Clarence.

Clarence had also been playing with his dressings trying to remove them.  Doctors had to place cloth cuffs on his arms to prevent them from bending up to his head.  Clever two year old that he is, Clarence just raised his leg back over his body and tried to get the bandages off with his toes.  Nurses report he was almost successful.

Both boys, dressed in matching blue and red soccer jumpsuits and wearing bright red socks, were all giggly and smiles this morning as their mother Arlene shuttled between their adjacent rooms at CHAM giving them their morning constitutionals, brushing their few teeth and giving them sponge baths.

“I’m getting very tired going between rooms every day,” Arlene said.  She said she wants to make sure she spends equal amounts of time with each of her boys, giving them all the personal attention they need.  “It’s very different taking care of them separately but holding each one in my arms is something I always dreamed about.

Doctors have issued no new medical updates on the boys who were formerly joined at the tops of their heads.  David Staffenberg, MD, one of the two lead surgeons on their medical team said today, “We’re all very pleased with the way things are progressing.”

Montefiore is establishing new standards in radiation treatment for many cancers. For example, to treat lung cancer we use Image-Guided Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IGRT), which allows unprecedented targeting of a lung tumor without harming surrounding tissue – even when the lungs move as the patient breathes.
