Dr. Shalom Kalnicki Appointed Chair For Radiation Oncology At Einstein And Montefiore
NEW YORK CITY,NY (July 1, 2004) -- Shalom Kalnicki, MD, has been named Chairman of Radiation Oncology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center. The announcement was made jointly by Dominick P. Purpura, MD, the Marilyn and Stanley Katz Dean of Einstein, and Spencer Foreman, MD, president of Montefiore.

With his appointment, Dr. Kalnicki returns to Einstein and Montefiore where he completed his residency in radiotherapy, then served as chief resident and a fellow. Most recently, Dr. Kalnicki has been director of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and Vice-Chairman for Clinical Affairs of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He was also director of the department’s residency program.

Dr. Kalnicki is an expert in the development of new radiation treatments such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Frameless Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Image Guided Radiation Therapy. These have had major impact on treating lung, breast, gynecologic, head and neck, and prostate cancers. IMRT allows for more focused, higher doses of radiation to the target tumor with much less normal tissue irradiation, with fewer side effects and complications. He has been co-principal investigator on numerous federally funded radiation therapy trials and also holds several major industry grants relating to new, cutting edge therapies in the field.

“Throughout the history of Einstein, we have strived to apply results from the laboratory to the clinical setting, where they can best serve patients,” said Dr. Purpura. “Dr. Kalnicki’s commitment to clinical research will serve both of our institutions and their programs well. We are very excited about the possibilities his leadership will afford both Einstein and Montefiore.

“It is with a great deal of pride that we welcome Dr. Kalnicki back to Montefiore in this very important position,” said Dr. Foreman. “He will no doubt serve both the school and medical center with distinction. Montefiore patients will benefit greatly from his appointment as chairman.”

Born in Israel, Dr. Kalnicki was educated in Brazil and earned his MD degree from the Medical School of the University of Sao Paulo. Following his internship in Brazil, he spent six years at AECOM/MMC and then worked in radiation oncology at the Oswaldo Cruz Radiotherapy Institute and The Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In 1988, Dr. Kalnicki joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and became director of radiation oncology at Magee Women’s Hospital and Shadyside Hospital of the Joint Radiation Oncology Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. From there he went to the Allegheny Campus of the Medical College of Pennsylvania where he was director of the Division of Radiation Oncology at Allegheny General Hospital, MCP-Hanneman School of Medicine and Allegheny University of the Health Sciences.

Dr. Kalnicki has held the rank of professor since 1997, first at MCP-Hanneman and Allegheny University of the Health Sciences and most recently at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Radiation Oncology and is active in all of the national professional societies in radiation oncology.
