Montefiore Medical Center Co-Sponsor's Bronx Week for Better Health of Bronxites

NEW YORK CITY,NY (June 16, 2004) -- For the third consecutive year, Montefiore Medical Center is a major co-sponsor of Bronx Week - the celebration of the best of the Bronx — its people, places, businesses, services, food, art and music. For more than 100 years, Montefiore has provided high quality healthcare, the finest in medical education and advances in medical research to residents of the Bronx and surrounding communities. Montefiore is hosting a number of special health events during Bronx Week and inviting Bronxites and all New Yorkers to participate.

“Montefiore is particularly pleased to have be a co-sponsor of this year’s Bronx Week celebration,” said Spencer Foreman, MD, president of Montefiore. “We are dedicated to providing quality healthcare to all who need it.” Dr. Foreman adds, “we see as our responsibility the care of this community.”

Family Health Walk

On Saturday, June 19, Montefiore will conduct The 2nd Annual Montefiore Family Health Walk. Free to all participants, the walk route will include Van Cortlandt Park, Mosholu Park, Bronx Park and end at the Bronx Zoo with free entry for participants who complete the walk. “Walking burns fat, lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, increases circulation, and reduces heart disease and risk of diabetes, all examples of specific diseases that are prevalent in the Bronx,” says Dr. Foreman.

The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore’s “Get Tested!” Adolescent Outreach Program
“Studies show, young people in the Bronx are among the nation’s highest at-risk populations for HIV infection. Yet, the majority of the Bronx’s 13- to 24-year-olds have never been tested to determine their HIV status,” says Donna Futterman, MD, director of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore’s Adolescent AIDS Program. To address this troubling epidemic this year’s “Get Tested!” Week sponsored by Montefiore’s Adolescent AIDS Program of The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), will coincide with Bronx Week.

The CHAM Adolescent Aids Program will be conducting testing throughout several Bronx neighborhoods where teams of health professionals and trained youth peer educators will deliver care and health messages about the importance of HIV testing and prevention. “This information can save lives,” says Dr. Futterman. The community-based testing can also aid in determining the need for life-extending drug therapies and precautions to help prevent the spread of the virus to others.

Montefiore Prostate Awareness Initiative

Montefiore also will continue its Prostate Awareness Initiative by offering free Prostate-Specific Antigen screenings (PSA), to middle-aged men who seek testing at Montefiore Medical Group locations during Bronx Week. Early detection affords the opportunity to diagnose prostate cancer in its early stages, when it’s most treatable. Montefiore has Centers of Excellence programs that focus specifically on these diseases and others commonly found in the Bronx, including diabetes, heart disease, asthma, cancer and HIV/AIDS.
