NEW YORK CITY,NY (March 2, 2004) -- According to newly released findings from the Alliance for Quality Health Care’s (AQHC) 2004 New York State Hospital Report Card, Montefiore Medical Center scores the highest marks in more categories than any other New York hospital in the state-wide survey. More than 300 hospitals in New York were graded based on their percentage of successful medical outcomes from treating such common and life-threatening conditions as heart attack and stroke.

“We are extremely pleased to be recognized for our quality in patient care by this independent organization,” said Spencer Foreman, M.D., president of Montefiore Medical Center. “Montefiore associates are dedicated to improving patient outcomes, and the commitment from our highly-specialized and experienced staff is evidenced in this report.” To make the Honor Roll, hospitals had to have treated at least thirty cases of a given condition with a risk-adjusted mortality rate that was (statistically) significantly lower than the state average (a 95% confidence interval).

In the study, hospital mortality rates were evaluated for thirteen procedures and conditions, and Montefiore Medical Center was given the highest ratings in the following areas:

Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
Craniotomy (surgical opening of the skull)
Acute myocardial infarction (heart attack)
Congestive heart failure
Acute stroke
Pneumonia

This is the second annual report card conducted by the AQHC and the Niagara Health Quality Coalition (NHQC), two public interest groups comprised of New York State businesses, consumer groups and health plans.
