Making an 'Unbelievable Recovery' Carl and Clarence Leave CHAM Less than 72-hours After Riskiest Sur

New York City, NY (February, 23, 2004) –  Conjoined Filipino twins Carl and Clarence Aguirre have bounced back so well from Friday’s complicated surgery at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM), that they will be leaving the hospital today to continue their rehabilitation in preparation for their next operation later this year.

This morning, the boys were both bright eyed and wide-awake, showing no signs of neurological deficit from their five-hour surgical ordeal. Carl was smiling coyly and clapping his hands, while Clarence gave all visitors his signature ‘high five’ greeting.

“Carl and Clarence are doing beautifully,” said James T. Goodrich, MD, director of pediatric neurosurgery, CHAM.  “They’re back to their pre-operative status with no neurological problems at all. We are most pleased.”

“The boys’ conditions are beyond our highest expectations,” said David Staffenberg, MD, chief of pediatric plastic surgery, CHAM.  “We believe one of the contributing factors in their speedy recovery is that they’ve been getting stronger and bigger day by day.”

Doctors are particularly pleased that Carl and Clarence have bounced back to their pre-operative health and personalities before the standard 72-hour waiting period was over.

“Normally, we would not expect them to look and act and feel this good less than three days after such major surgery,” said Robert Marion, MD, their lead pediatrician at CHAM.
