Carl and Clarence 'Really Perfect' After Surgery at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore

New York City, NY (February 26, 2004) – Conjoined Filipino twins, Carl and Clarence Aguirre, are in “really perfect” condition today as they continue to recuperate from last Friday’s surgery -- the latest in a series of procedures that ultimately will separate them.

The twins, who are joined at the tops of their heads, stay at Blythedale Children’s Hospital where they receive special therapy in between the surgeries, which are performed at The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM).

Robert Marion, MD, Carl and Clarence’s lead pediatrician, says “the boys have not yet restarted their physical and speech therapy regimen as they are regaining strength after their major surgery.” He stresses that there are absolutely no neurological problems evident and that the boys are in really perfect condition.

“One of the interesting things we‘re noting about the boys,” said Dr. Marion, “ is that they have different sleep patterns and sleep at different times.”  According to Dr. Marion, the challenge is that when Carl tries to sleep, Clarence wakes him by doing his now famous wiggle dance.  "When Clarence is tired, Carl is a bit more thoughtful and lets him sleep, while he quietly plays with his Slinky toy.”

No date has been set for the next surgical procedure, which doctors say will be timed to how well the boys themselves are growing and gaining strength and healing.
