“The Essure procedure now means women can opt for permanent birth control without entering an operating room, as no incisions are required and everything can be done without general anesthesia,” said Mark Levie, MD, director, Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health, Montefiore Medical Center, Moses Division. Dr. Levie is the first to perform the Essureprocedure at Montefiore.
Montefiore was also chosen as the first Training Center for Essure, providing gynecologists in the New York area, and across the country, with a venue for in-depth training in the procedure. The Essure Training Center at Montefiore is officially opened in September of 2003.“Clinical trials of Essuredemonstrated that most women can return to normal daily activities within one or two days,” said Dr. Levie. “This was of major importance to the women in our center who had the procedure.”
“The availability of this procedure at Montefiore provides a tremendous alternative for women looking at permanent birth control options,” said Ira Karmin, MD, director, Gynecology, Montefiore Medical Center Jack D. Weiler Division.“Montefiore is committed to continuing improvements in the quality of women’s health care, and to delivering the widest variety of healthcare options for women,” said Dr. Levie.
“We are excited to be the first medical center in the New York metropolitan area to offer this innovative method and to be the first designated Essure Training Center,” he said.
Tubal Ligation Most Prevalent Birth Control Choice
Currently, an estimated 700,000 American women undergo tubal ligation each year. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, incisional tubal ligation continues to be the most prevalent form of birth control in the U.S, with 41 percent of women age 35 to 39 and 50 percent of women age 40 to 44 choosing this technique. Incisional tubal ligation remains the most popular form of birth control worldwide despite the fact that it is invasive and costly. About 93 percent of the incisional laparoscopic tubal ligation procedures in the US are performed in a hospital or surgi-center under general anesthesia, typically requiring four to six days of recovery before returning to regular activities.
