NEW YORK CITY, NY (November 29, 2003) -- At 12:10 PM today 19-month-old conjoined Filipino twins, Carl and Clarence Aguirre, left The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) four days after undergoing the second in a series of surgeries to separate the boys, who are joined at the top of their heads.
"The boys are wide awake and back to their old playful selves keeping their mother, Arlene, busy at their beside trying to keep them from crawling out," said David Staffenberg, MD, chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at CHAM, one of the boys’ lead surgeons.
"More important than anything else," Dr. Staffenberg said, "is that there are no signs of neurological problems."
The twins are headed back to the rehabilitation hospital where they will continue nutritional and physical therapy until they return to CHAM for the third, and possibly last, separation procedure, tentatively scheduled for sometime in February 2004.
