Carl and Clarence in 'Good Condition' This Morning at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore

NEW YORK CITY, NY (November 26, 2003)  --  Doctors at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) say today that conjoined Filipino twins, Clarence and Carl Aguirre, are "in good condition, recuperating normally from Monday's surgery", which was the second in a series of procedures designed ultimately to separate the two boys.

“Carl slept in a bit later this morning than his brother, Clarence, because Carl decided to stay up most of the night,” said Robert Marion, MD, the boys’ pediatrician and director, Center for Congenital Disorders at CHAM

Because CHAM operates on a philosophy of “family-centered care,” mother Arlene Aguirre stays in the boys’ room in the CHAM pediatric critical care unit.  “So of course Arlene was up most of the night soothing and comforting Carl, something all parents can relate to,” said Dr. Marion.  “Clarence slept peacefully through the night and was awake and alert and ready to go first thing this morning.”

Ongoing assessments of the twins show that, so far, there has been no neurological impact from the surgery.
