MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER DESIGNATED A REGIONAL PERINATAL CENTER BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
BRONX, N.Y (February 12, 2002) - Montefiore Medical Center has been designated a regional perinatal center (RPC) by the New York State Department of Health. As an RPC, Montefiore offers specialized perinatal treatment for high-risk pregnancies and has a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for premature infants. In addition, this certification formalizes the collaboration between Montefiore and its affiliates, Flushing Hospital and Bronx Lebanon Hospital, and provides the community with a comprehensive system of high level perinatal care. Through this partnership, the affiliates gain staff training and technical support from Montefiore.
“This is an acknowledgement by the Department of Health of the excellent obstetric and neonatal care that Montefiore provides. It also reaffirms Montefiore’s ongoing leadership within the medical community,” said Irwin Merkatz, MD, chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology & Women’s Health.
As a designated regional perinatal center, Montefiore will:
- Maintain the highest level of care and service in coordination with its affiliate hospitals
- Provide attending-level physicians to oversee all specialty and subspecialty consultations
- Provide a neonatal transport program for transferring newborns requiring specialized services at Montefiore
- Assist with quality improvements at affiliate hospitals
- Participate and coordinate regional data collection, analysis and other activities among the affiliate hospitals
