Montefiore Medical Center Opens New Orthopaedic Center: Facility Offers All Sub-Specialties
BRONX, NY (January 2, 2002) - The Center for Orthopaedic Specialties at Montefiore opens its doors today in a new, 11,700-square-foot suite of offices that fills an entire floor in The Tower at Montefiore Medical Park at Eastchester Road and Blondell Avenue.

"This is an exciting time for us and for our patients," said Neil J. Cobelli, MD, interim chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Joint Replacements at Montefiore and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. "The new offices allow us to bring together under one roof a dozen orthopaedic sub-specialists in a magnificently designed environment with state-of-the art technology. There is no other facility like it in the Bronx or lower Westchester."

Surgeons and physicians in the following sub-specialty services have offices at the Center: hand and wrist, shoulder and elbow, hip and knee (reconstruction), foot and ankle, spine, pediatric orthopaedics, general orthopaedics, sports medicine, orthopaedic trauma, orthopaedic tumor service, podiatry and osteoporosis.

The facility boasts a spacious lobby, decorated with artwork and two colorful fish tanks; three separate office suites; 18 examination rooms; an orthoscopic lab; an X-ray suite and conference rooms.

The lobby has a digital-age interactive kiosk that serves as a consumer learning center. It includes a library of DVD (digital video disk) educational films on arthritis and other diseases, as well as illustrated surgical procedures, that can be viewed on computer monitors by patients and their families. Printed material and a lending library of video tapes are also available. Periodically, on Saturdays, the community will be invited to attend educational seminars.

"The vast majority of orthopaedic problems can be resolved by conservative medical management, using injectables or oral medications, but our team is prepared with the most modern surgical techniques when needed, and we have great strengths in all orthopaedic surgical sub-specialties.” said Dr. Cobelli. "We also have the most advanced technology available to diagnose muscular skeletal diseases of all types."

While the Center for Orthopaedic Specialties at Montefiore expects to see 1,000 patients per week, the interior design plan of the facility ensures a friendly, intimate experience for patients and their families. Patients are greeted in the spacious entrance lobby, and then guided to one of three separate office suites where they visit their private physicians.

Montefiore Medical Center, The University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, is an internationally recognized leader in patient care, education, research and community services. Montefiore provides treatment programs for patients with all major illnesses and has distinguished centers of excellence in heart care, cancer care, children’s health, women’s health and surgery.
