Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Is Safer More Thorough If Performed With Image Guidance System: Study
NEW YORK CITY,NY (May 2001)-- Using image guidance systems (IGS) for endoscopic sinus surgery, a complex procedure that takes place near the brain and optic nerve, surgeons can reduce the complications associated with the procedure and perform a more thorough operation, according to a study to be presented at The American Rhinologic Society Meeting on May 14, 2001 by Marvin P. Fried, M.D., lead author and chairman of Otolaryngology at Montefiore Medical Center.

Image guidance, a relatively new technology for endoscopic sinus surgery, uses 3-D images of a patient’s nasal cavity to help locate the sinus tissue on which to operate and help avoid the optic nerve and brain. The new findings are important because endoscopic sinus surgery has become the procedure of choice for patients suffering from sinusitis. Until now, no comparative studies have been conducted to compare the benefits to the risks of using the new guidance systems.

“These are important findings for surgeons who use image-guided systems. The study concluded that surgery performed with the image guidance system is safer because it helped reduce complications. The study also concludes that image guidance allows for a more thorough procedure -- a greater number of troublesome sinuses were identified and operated on,” said Dr. Fried. “The drawback to image-guided surgery is that it: may take longer, and as a consequence, there may be slightly greater blood loss.”

The retrospective study compared 97 patients who had endoscopic sinus surgery using IGS with 61 patients in a control group, who had similar procedures but without IGS. Five surgeons participated in the study.
