Endovascular neurosurgery delivers an advanced therapeutic approach focused on the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of vascular diseases of the central nervous system and spine.
Our Neurovascular team is comprised of the highest caliber neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists—all with advanced fellowship training, experience and expertise in these sophisticated techniques. Our physicians use the most highly developed procedures to treat patients of all ages suffering from a broad spectrum of often complex and life-threatening conditions—such as strokes, aneurysms, and vascular malformations. These minimally invasive techniques often eliminate the need for open surgery.
Montefiore is one of a small group of medical centers in the New York metropolitan area—and the only hospital in the Bronx—to offer such state-of-the-art services for complex cases.
As part of our Department of Neurosurgery, itself among the most respected and renowned in the nation, the Neurovascular Program offers the complete array of contemporary surgical solutions—endovascular, open and hybrid—all in one setting and, when necessary, available at a moment's notice.
A Minimally Invasive Approach
There are many crucial and far-reaching advantages to these newer minimally invasive options. Risk is substantially less. Hospital stays are reduced. Recovery is shorter and much more comfortable. There is very little blood loss. There is no incision, and therefore no scarring. And, ultimately, patients are more satisfied.
Multidisciplinary Care: Invaluable Patient Benefits
Montefiore has been at the forefront of the rapidly evolving area of endovascular neurosurgery since its beginnings in the early 1990s, when we were among the first to enter the field. Since then, our team has expanded exponentially and now includes five dedicated Neurointerventional radiologists, as well as a neurosurgeon who is trained in both open and endovascular operations – the only such neurosurgeon in the Bronx. This complements our very experienced and recognized leadership position in the field of cerebrovascular neurosurgery.
To ensure optimal patient outcomes, this program is a true interdisciplinary effort between our neurosurgeons, the Department of Radiology, our neurology team from The Stern Stroke Center, the Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and the Departments Head and Neck Surgery and Radiation Oncology.
This collaborative approach, a hallmark of care at Montefiore, has allowed us to consistently offer new patient protocols and pioneering treatments, frequently before they are available elsewhere.
The Most Advanced Responses to Numerous Conditions and Diseases
We provide treatment for the entire spectrum of neurovascular diseases in both adults and children, encompassing acute stroke, brain aneurysms, brain and spinal AVMs, carotid-cavernous fistulas (CCF), dural arteriovenous fistulas, vein of Galen malformations and vasospasm.

Groundbreaking Research and Scientific Inquiry
Montefiore's partnership with Einstein advances clinical and translational research to accelerate the pace at which new discoveries become the treatments and therapies that benefit patients. Research is vital to our physicians' mission to establish new treatment methods for brain and spinal vascular disorders Our distinguished physicians and surgeons have numerous clinical, translational and basic studies in progress at all times. They have also published papers documenting these ongoing treatments and studies.
