Message from the Residency Program Director
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center.
The Residency Program in the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore, the University Hospital for the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, offers a breadth of clinical rotations in cardiothoracic anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, critical care, and pain management subspecialties.
Our cardiac service is world-renowned and provides every type of surgery currently performed in the United States. The Children’s Hospital at Montefiore cares for the sickest children, many of whom travel from abroad, allowing pediatric anesthesia residents direct access to a wide range of surgical procedures. Our busy high-risk obstetric service handles many complicated cases, and residents are involved daily. Our residents receive a comprehensive education and experience in handling a wide variety of subspecialty cases. By the time they have completed their rotations, residents will be extremely well trained and prepared for an academic or private practice.
Our residents are mentored by the physicians who are internationally and nationally recognized for their innovation and clinical excellence and residents are trained to use some of the most advanced medical technologies available.
Many of our residents are engaged in research, both clinical trials and project-based research, with the help of a dedicated research coordinator to advise on study protocols and Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines for human subject research. In addition to research projects, other academic endeavors including book chapters, review articles, ASA committee memberships, and giving lectures are included.
The clinical curriculum at Montefiore follows all ACGME requirements with regard to education, work hours and work environment.
Though Montefiore’s residency program is large, it is also personal. Our faculty are excellent teachers, and our residents can choose a mentor to guide them in their education. The atmosphere is supportive and fosters professional relationships that will prove invaluable throughout residents’ careers.
At Montefiore we emphasize that:
- Residents are learners first
- Resident well- being is paramount to learning
- The anesthesia faculty are life-long learners who as teachers and mentors keep the clinical bar of excellence at the highest level. This will make the operating room the optimal teaching environment
- Time for critical reading and research are essential for the professional and personal growth for each resident
I have an open door policy for our residents and they can reach me any time with any issues.
