Strength through Laughter Support Program
Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care
Strength through Laughter is a monthly support group that uses the power of humor to support and inspire people with cancer and their significant others.
Research shows that laughter can be healing. The simple experience of laughing can help lower stress, anxiety, discomfort and pain, and can lift our spirits. Sharing a laugh with others can create a sense of connection and make it easier to cope.
In Strength through Laughter, group members share laughter, support, encouragement and information. Guest speakers also provide education on important topics such as insomnia and treatment symptoms.
“The group is for people who are focusing on living and being positive and who don’t want to feel alone. We [serve a diverse population]…but what everyone has in common is the challenge of living with cancer… But I can almost guarantee that after one of my groups, you’ll be laughing on the way home,” Gloria Nelson, LMSW, an Oncology social worker and the group’s facilitator explained in a recent issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
