Pain Management/Palliative Care

The decision for cancer patients to accept supportive or palliative care services versus aggressive treatment is often very difficult for family members. It means accepting a poor prognosis, but it also means giving a very special kind of care to a loved one. It means a new goal of providing a peaceful, pain-free death in the presence of loved ones.

In an effort to provide comfort versus cure, the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care offers palliative care services in the hospital, at home or in a setting specializing in such attention. We provide support for patients and family members including specialized equipment, skilled nurses, physicians and specialists, and support groups or bereavement care.

Palliative care may also include chemotherapy or radiation for pain control. However, it is important that the patient and family understand that the goal of such therapy is not for treatment or cure, but to relieve pain and discomfort as much as possible.
