Dr Pe'er Dar is the director of the Division of Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health at Montefiore Medical Center. He is also a Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women's Health at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His postgraduate training included residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and High Risk Pregnancies in Israel, residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Fellowship in Clinical Genetics in the USA and training in Fetal Surgery in Europe.
Under Dr Dar's leadership, the Prenatal and Gynecological Ultrasound services see over 40,000 visits every year. He especially specializes in first trimester screening for chromosome (like Down syndrome) and structural problems of the fetus; detailed fetal anatomy scans in early and late second trimester; fetal echocardiography (scanning of the fetal heart); fetal neurosonography (scanning of the fetal brain) and management of placental complications like placenta accreta. As a trained geneticist Dr Dar performed thousands of prenatal diagnosis procedures like chorionic villi sampling, amniocentesis; cordocentesis and placental biopsies.
Dr Dar's main focus for over the last 10 years is advancing the care of women that carry babies who suffer from problems that can affect their lives. To this end he established the fetal medicine team collaboration at Montefiore Medical Center. He was one of the first experts in the tri-state area to perform a fetoscopic laser surgery on twins suffering from twin to twin transfusion syndrome. In collaboration with specialists from the Children Hospital at Montefiroe, Dr Dar and his team performed several EXIT (EX utero Intrapartum treatment) procedures. These complicated procedures, which require collaboration of dozens of professionals in the operating room, are mostly done to guarantee an airway for babies that will otherwise die if born without the procedure. The fetal team under his leadership also performs Radio Frequency ablations (RFA) for Twin Reversed Arterial Perfusion (TRAP) sequence Selective fetal reductions, fetal blood transfusions, in-utero placement of vesico-amniotic shunts and thoracoamniotic shunts.
Dr Dar is very active in research and he is currently the principal investigator in more than 10 studies including international multicenter studies. Many of his trainees in Maternal Fetal Medicine are now leaders in other centers in NYC and across the USA.
