Peter F. Belamarich, MD, trained in gastroenterology and nutrition but returned to the practice of general pediatrics and retained my clinical activities and interest in non-procedural gastroenterology. He regularly practices and writes about both areas.
Within general pediatrics, Dr. Belamarich interests include the diagnostic process, diagnostic errors, the practice of general pediatrics, well-child care, the application of evidence-based medicine to pediatric practice and the use of electronic health records. He also focuses on nutrition, lipid disorders, cardiovascular health, and obesity and infant formula.
Dr. Belamarich has been a regular panel member of the FDA orphan drug review process and also enjoys acting as a reviewer for journals. He reviews for Pediatrics and JAMA Pediatrics and the Journal of Pediatrics. Dr. Belamarich also has been appointed to the Editorial Board of Pediatrics in Review.
In 2011, Dr. Belamarich served as lead medical reviewer for an FDA panel charged with evaluating a novel lipid-lowering medication. He is currently a member of the National Lipid Association. Dr. Belamarich believes that recent advances in imaging technology will make the identification of children at high risk of developing heart disease as young adults easier and more accurate.
Dr. Belamarich teaches and sees patients in the Comprehensive Family Care Center. In 2010, he won the Lewis Fraud Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching.
He received his medical from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, where he was chief resident. He then finished a postdoctoral fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition for the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.
