Biography

Michael Lerner, MD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology, joined Montefiore in 2016. After graduating summa cum laude from Brandeis University, Dr. Lerner earned his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2010. He completed his residency training in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and went on to complete a fellowship in laryngology/neurolaryngology at New York Center for Voice & Swallowing Disorders with Dr. Andrew Blitzer, MD, DDS. Before joining the department at Montefiore, Dr. Lerner was a clinical instructor at the Ichan School of Medicine and an attending physician at Mount Sinai-St. Luke's Roosevelt Medical Center. In addition to his appointment at Montefiore, he is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Yale School of Medicine, where he is collaborating with one of his mentors, Clarence Sasaki, MD, FACS, in the Yale Larynx Laboratory.

Dr. Lerner's research focuses on laryngeal neurophysiology with a particular interest in peripheral nerve injury, disorders of laryngeal irritability and neuromodulation.

At Montefiore, Dr. Lerner's practice will treat all disorders of the larynx (voice, swallowing, breathing) with a particular focus on neurolaryngologic disease. He has received highly specialized training in the use of botulinum toxin (commonly in the form of Botox) for the treatment of a variety of head and neck disorders, including laryngeal dystonias (spasmodic dysphonia), oromandibular dystonia, vocal tremor, blepharospasm, palatal myoclonus, Frey's syndrome (gustatory sweating), First Bite Syndrome, sialorrhea, temporomandibular disorder (TMD or TMJ disorders) and migraine.
