Montefiore News Releases

January 8, 2007

New York City, NY (January 8, 2007)   — David A. Tanner has been elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Montefiore Medical Center, effective January 1.  He succeeds Jay B. Langner, who has served as Chairman since 1986.

“I look forward to working even more closely with Montefiore’s senior leadership as we continue to build on Jay’s legacy, Montefiore’s unparalleled record of remarkable growth and its tradition of medical excellence and leadership in healthcare advocacy,” said Tanner.  “We must engage a new generation of social activists and contributors to help extend the positive and far-reaching impact Montefiore has on the health and the social welfare of the people and communities it serves.”

Tanner, 48, is executive vice president of ContiGroup Companies, Inc., and a member of its Management Committee, where he is focusing on the firm’s investment activities.  He has been a private equity investor in New York for more than 20 years.  Previously, Tanner was one of four founding partners of Quadrangle Group LLC, a private investment firm based in New York with approximately $5 billion in assets under management.

“Montefiore will be in excellent hands with David Tanner as the new Board Chair,” said Jay B. Langner. “During the last eight years I have worked closely with David as Montefiore has grown to a financially strong $2 billion enterprise.  David is a terrific leader who will continue to be a tremendous asset for Montefiore’s future.”

“I am excited to usher in a new chapter for the medical center with David Tanner as our Board leader,” said Spencer Foreman, MD, president of Montefiore.  “Together, we will continue to oversee the extraordinary development of a medical center whose unique focus and approach serves as a model to urban health care systems throughout the country."

“We are deeply grateful to Jay Langner for presiding over a period of unprecedented growth and development for Montefiore during the last two decades,” said Dr. Foreman.

Tanner joined the Montefiore Board of Trustees in 1998 and is a member of the Executive Committee and co-head (with fellow Montefiore trustee Jide Zeitlin) of the Capital Campaign for Montefiore Medical Center.  He also is a trustee of the New York University School of Law, the Jewish Communal Fund and the Citizens Budget Commission. Tanner is a director of Lawyers for Children, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing free legal and social work services to children in New York’s foster care system.

Tanner graduated with honors from Princeton University, received a diploma in Economics from the London School of Economics and a J.D. degree from the New York University School of Law. Tanner is married to Peggy Epstein Tanner and they have three children:  Eric (17), Mark (16) and Robert (12).
