BRONX, NY (October 14, 2008) - A large contingent of Montefiore Medical Center associates is participating in this year's 14th Annual Tour de Bronx bike ride through the borough. Montefiore is a major corporate sponsor of the event which inaugurates a "Healthy Living" initiative by the medical center.

"The Tour de Bronx is an exhilerating salute to healthy living and a brilliant showcase for the beauty and vitality of our borough," said Steven M. Safyer, MD, president and CEO, Montefiore. "As the largest provider of healthcare in the Bronx, Montefiore Medical Center is proud to sponsor the Tour de Bronx and to participate with a team of hundreds of our own associates. The Tour de Bronx exemplifies Montefiore's focus on advancing the health of the communities we serve, and our entire team looks forward to cycling in this event with families and neighbors from all across the Bronx."

The Montefiore riders will be lead by Dr. Safyer, Board of Trustees Chairman David A. Tanner and Peter Selwyn, MD, chairman of the Department of Family and Social Medicine.

As the growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes impacts heavily on the Bronx, it is essential for us to support health promotion and wellness activities for our patients, our communities, our co-workers and ourselves," Dr. Selwyn said. "The Tour de Bronx is a great opportunity to increase awareness about the importance of exercise and a healthy environment -- and a wonderful way for people to see and learn about this incredibly diverse borough. At Montefiore, we have also embarked on a broader iniative to promote health and wellness, including training Zumba (aerobic Latin dance) instructors in our community health centers, increasing access to fresh fruit and vegetables in underserved neighborhoods and working closely with community partners to create healthier local environments."

The 14th Annual Tour de Bronx takes place on Sunday, October 19. It is hosted by Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion and Transportation Alternatives. The other major corporate sponsor is St. Barnabas Hospital.
