Center Offers Most Advanced Laser Technology for Refractive Surgery

Scarsdale, NY (June 7, 2011) -  The new Montefiore Laser and Eye Center recently opened its doors to provide comprehensive care to Westchester patients at the Montefiore Medical Specialists of Westchester in Scarsdale, New York. Seven board-certified ophthalmologists from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center provide patients with specialty emphasis in pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplastic surgery, glaucoma, cornea and laser refractive surgery.

"This is an exciting time for the department, as we continue to establish ourselves both regionally and nationally as a leader in comprehensive, state-of-the art eye care services," said Roy Chuck, MD, PHD Chair of the Department and Paul Henkind Chair and Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. "We are thrilled to make our specialty services available to residents of Westchester and look forward to a continued expansion in the future."

The center provides patients with laser refractive surgery, including LASIK to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. It also houses the WaveLight FS200 Femtosecond Laser which improves safety and efficacy during the LASIK.  The laser is the latest technology currently available for LASIK and the first of its kind to be installed in the Northeast United States.

Roy Chuck, MD, PHD, who is a long-time representative of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AACO), provides refractive surgery, as well as Prabjot Channa, MD, David Gritz, MD and Chrstine Kim, OD.

The center offers a full range of diagnostic services and medical and surgical treatments for glaucoma under the direction of glaucoma specialist Jeffrey Schultz, MD. The oculoplastic surgeon is Robert M. Schwarcz, MD, and his expertise ranges from simple eyelid malpositions to more complex reconstruction involving the eyelids, orbits, lacrimal system and the face.

The subspecialty in pediatric ophthalmology encompasses children's visual development, vision care and eye diseases, which often differ from adult vision care. Pediatric ophthalmologist Norman B. Medow, MD, focuses on treatments including medication, glasses and ocular surgery in children.

As one of the largest ophthalmology departments in the country, Montefiore has 29 full-time faculty, nationally recognized researchers with 13 NIH grants, and award-winning community service programs to prevent blindness. In partnership with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore is a longstanding educational institution in the field of ophthalmology, teaching and training many of the nation's finest ophthalmologists.
