World Renowned Endocrinologist Dr. Yaron Tomer to Assume Position in March 2016

NEW YORK (December 15, 2015)—Leading endocrinology researcher and clinician Yaron Tomer, M.D., has been named professor and university chair of the Department of Medicine at Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Tomer, who is joining Montefiore-Einstein from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, will assume his position on March 1, 2016.

“Following an extensive search of highly distinguished candidates from across the country, Dr. Tomer stood out as the clear choice to lead the Department of Medicine,” said Philip O. Ozuah, M.D., Ph.D., chief operating officer, Montefiore. “Dr. Tomer is an exceptional clinician and endocrine researcher. We look forward to him joining us and continuing to advance the research activities and high quality care provided in our largest clinical department.”

Dr. Tomer previously served as vice chair for Research; division chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Bone Disease, and held the Lillian and Henry M. Stratton Professor of Molecular Medicine at Mount Sinai. As division chief, Dr. Tomer oversaw a major expansion of the clinical and research operations in endocrinology; a new pituitary clinical and research center; the only adrenal center in New York City; and a new program for medical management and obesity.

Dr. Tomer is a world-renowned researcher with a robust, NIH-funded laboratory. His research team has focused on the immunogenetic, epigenetic, and environmental mechanisms causing thyroid autoimmunity and type 1 diabetes.

“Dr. Tomer brings a wealth of experience in basic and translational research, a proven record for securing talented recruits and NIH funding, as well as a commitment to excellence,” said Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein. “His skills and accomplishments will strengthen our already robust research enterprise and inspire new generations of medical students being trained as both scientists and physicians.”

Dr. Tomer is author of more than 170 manuscripts and chapters, and has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including Endocrinology, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, Autoimmune Reviews, and Thyroid.  He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, as well as of the American College of Endocrinology. He is the recipient of several national awards, including the American Thyroid Association’s highest honor, the Van Meter Award.

Born and raised in Israel, Dr. Tomer received his M.D. degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, his medical residency at Sheba Medical Center, Israel, and his endocrinology training at Mount Sinai.
