Montefiore’s Department of Surgery Receives Meritorious Recognition from the American College of Surgeons

Exemplary Surgical Patient Care and Outcomes Recognized for Third Consecutive Year
New York (March 11, 2014) –Montefiore Medical Center’s Department of Surgery has received meritorious recognition for its outstanding surgical results from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) for the third year in a row. ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®) is a nationally validated, risk-adjusted, outcomes-based program to measure and improve the quality of surgical care in private sector hospitals. ACS NSQIP evaluated more than 330 hospitals and Montefiore was one of 37 to receive this distinction.

Michler, M.D., surgeon-in-chief, Montefiore, professor and chairman, Department of Surgery, Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “I am extremely proud of our highly skilled surgeons and the results we produce for our patients, and I’m encouraged by what I see on the horizon for our growing department.”
As an ACS NSQIP participant, Montefiore is required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that directs patient safety activities and the quality of surgical care improvements. ACS NSQIP bases its selection on outcomes related to patient management in nine clinical areas including, mortality; ventilator use more than 48 hours; renal failure; deep vein thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, and pulmonary embolism; and cardiac incidents. Hospitals that participate in ACS NSQIP have been shown to advance their quality of care by reducing mortality and morbidity rates and reducing costs associated with preventable complications and adverse events.
