Dr. W. Scott Melvin Named Chief of the Division of General Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine

Renowned Surgical Innovator to Transform Department of Surgery

 NEW YORK (February 25, 2014) – Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University named W. Scott Melvin, M.D., F.A.C.S., vice chairman, chief of the Division of General Surgery, director of Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery, Department of Surgery, Montefiore, and professor of Surgery, Einstein. Dr. Melvin joins from The Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, where he held many leadership appointments, including professor of Surgery with tenure, executive vice chairman of Surgery and chief of the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery.

“Dr. Melvin is an innovative researcher and exceptional clinician who brings an important expertise to Montefiore,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO, Montefiore. “Our surgical program continues to advance. We are successfully performing more complex surgeries and recruiting a range of skills and experience. We are pleased Dr. Melvin will be joining us and contributing to our growing excellence in Surgery.”

Dr. Melvin is internationally recognized for his expertise in general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, minimally invasive surgery and new technology development. He is the immediate past president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgery, the largest society of gastrointestinal surgeons in North America, and has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed articles and 20 book chapters.

“Dr. Melvin’s energy, breadth of knowledge and experience as a clinician and researcher will make him a superb contribution to our team of surgeons,” said Robert E. Michler, M.D., surgeon-in-chief, Montefiore, professor and chairman in the Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and professor and chairman in the Department of Surgery, Einstein. “Dr. Melvin’s impressive publication record, his commitment to research and development, and his clinical accomplishments will continue our transformation in surgery at Montefiore.”

Dr. Melvin is the founder of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery, which educates hundreds of surgeons each year and has received more than 15 years of continual funding. He also is responsible for instituting a variety of clinical programs, including minimally invasive bariatric surgery, donor nephrectomy and incisionless surgery. At The Ohio State University, Dr. Melvin also developed specialized Divisions in Acute Care and Trauma Surgery as well as a Division of Colorectal Surgery.

“At Montefiore, I will have the wonderful opportunity to implement specialty surgery programs that will offer new options for patients,” said Dr. Melvin. “My goal is to expand our clinical research by developing multidisciplinary teams focusing on GI disease and by evaluating emerging innovative technologies.”

Dr. Melvin received his Medical Degree in 1987 from the University of Toledo College of Medicine and completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Maryland.
