Montefiore Establishes Acupuncture Clinic For Patients with Chronic Pain, Musculoskeletal and Neurological Disorders

Ancient Chinese Therapy is Offered as Part of Comprehensive Patient Care

NEW YORK (January 14, 2012) – Montefiore Medical Center said today it will open an acupuncture clinic to treat patients suffering from chronic pain, arthritis, muscle strain and other conditions. Through the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, acupuncture will be offered at two sites in the Bronx beginning this month.

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical technique that can be used in place of, or in conjunction with, conventional Western treatments.  It has been shown to stimulate energy flow along pathways in the body known as meridians through the insertion of thin metal needles in one or more of 360 acupoints.

“We are pleased to be able to offer acupuncture as part of Montefiore’s approach to the comprehensive care of our patients,” said Stanley F. Wainapel, M.D., M.P.H., clinical director of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. “Scientific studies have shown that stimulation of certain nerve fibers can result in reduced pain and alleviation of illness-related symptoms such as nausea.”

Acupuncture increases the body’s production of endorphins and blocks the perception of pain. It is non-invasive with limited side effects and can serve as an effective alternative to medications for a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders. Acupuncture also can be helpful in managing chronic headaches, insomnia or stress-related anxiety.

Dr. Wainapel, along with Yumei Wang, M.D., and Jennifer Halstead-Kenny, M.D., both attending physicians, are licensed medical acupuncturists who will be providing treatment.  Beginning this month, treatment will be offered on Tuesday afternoons at the Montefiore Moses campus and at 1500 Blondell Ave., and at the Blondell Avenue location all day Fridays.  Referral from a primary care provider is required.
