Each year, approximately 24,000 patients of all ages come to Montefiore Medical Center with conditions ranging from muscle strains to acute injuries such as ligament or cartilage tears in the knee and rotator cuff tears. Each patient works with an experienced physician specialized in sports medicine who can provide a diagnosis, treatment options and preventative care.
Our Sports Medicine physicians relieve discomfort due to injuries or illnesses by applying the latest advances in technology and research. We use noninvasive options such as physical therapy, bracing and pharmaceuticals if appropriate.
When surgery is required, the majority of procedures are now accomplished arthroscopically. Minimally invasive procedures decrease rehabilitation therapy and recovery time so patients can return to their activities as soon as possible.
Our fellowship-trained sports medicine specialists and team of pediatric surgeons, physical therapists and radiologists, treat all types of sports medicine conditions that threaten the function and comfort of the shoulder, upper extremities, hip, knee, ankle, and foot.
Some of the most common sports injuries and conditions that we treat include:
Research is important to improve clinical outcomes and advance our understanding of sports medicine injuries.
The Sports Medicine physicians initiate and participate in numerous clinical and basic science research to achieve these goals. For example, our physicians and researchers are currently investigating studies of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft procedures, rotator cuff repair techniques, cartilage restoration techniques and pain mediators in shoulder injuries. Our basic science laboratory continues to be at the forefront of orthopaedic sports medicine research.
