Shoulder Surgery

Montefiore Medical Center's shoulder surgeons lead an unparalleled team of practitioners who combine clinical orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitative sports medicine, physical and occupational therapy, and basic science research to provide the most advanced treatment to our patients with shoulder disorders. Our goal is to provide the highest quality care for those experiencing discomfort due to a traumatic injury or degenerative disorder in order to help them achieve complete pain relief and regain their full shoulder function and mobility.

Patients of all ages with the entire gamut of shoulder problems, such as sprains, dislocations, and fractures, to arthritis and rotator cuff tears, are seen daily and rapidly returned to full shoulder health. Each patient receives specialized attention and draws from the vast expertise of our extraordinary team of three full-time shoulder surgeons, physicians, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and physical therapists, who determine the best possible individualized treatment. Many of our patients are able to take advantage of non-invasive management of their individual conditions, such as transcutaneous electrical neuromuscular stimulation and physical rehabilitation using isokinetic machines for strengthening, but for others, surgery may be the most effective solution.

Distinguished Technology and Procedures

When operative treatment is warranted, the procedures performed at Montefiore for shoulder disorders are state-of-the-art. Several of these procedures involve minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, which results in less postoperative pain and a faster recuperation, versus traditional open surgery. In fact, our board-certified, fellowship trained physicians are among only a few in the region using fully arthroscopic surgery for rotator cuff repairs.

In addition to rotator cuff repair, other shoulder procedures surgeons conduct at Montefiore include:

Ongoing Research

Each year shoulder injuries send approximately four million Americans to physicians for treatment. The sheer volume of those experiencing shoulder problems is incentive to study and explore new techniques, technology, and procedures to enhance patients' treatment success and recovery time. The shoulder surgeons at Montefiore dedicate a significant amount of time to clinical and basic science research as well as training the shoulder surgeons of tomorrow in order to perpetuate this goal.

We are currently conducting clinical research with respect to arthroscopic rotator repairs. The purpose of this endeavor is to study the biomechanical effectiveness of current instrumentation and techniques to optimize its use, which translates to better outcomes and greater pain relief for patients. Additionally, our othopaedic surgery residents may take advantage of numerous research projects, and our physicians actively incorporate this as well as intensive training into their curriculum, in order to cultivates the next generation of some of the finest shoulder surgeons in the nation.
