Hand Surgery

The orthopaedic hand surgeons at Montefiore Medical Center provide comprehensive care to patients suffering from degenerative and congenital disorders of the hand or wrist as well as those who have contracted an infection or sustained trauma.

Each year over 10,000 patient visits are for those seeking specialized expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions from simple fractures and carpal tunnel syndrome to malignant tumors and reimplantation of detached digits. Our goal is to optimize the restoration of the mobility and function of our patient's hands and wrists while minimizing their recovery time.

Using both surgical and non-surgical treatments, our board-certified fellowship trained hand surgeons care for all functional problems extending from the tips of the fingers to the shoulders. Many concerns, such as a broken wrist due to osteoporosis, can be addressed with a cast, but other situations require surgery. However, we make every attempt to treat each patient as conservatively as possible first before discussing possible surgical options with you.

All-Encompassing Services and State-of-the-Art Treatments and Procedures

Unlike many other hospitals that specialize in one or few areas, our extraordinary team treats all common conditions such as: carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, trigger finger, tennis elbow, accidents involving cut tendons and nerves, and distal radius fractures. We also treat complex cases including: congenital and degenerative disorders, Dupuytren's contracture (when the connective tissue under the palm's skin thickens and scars, often causing the fingers to curl in a bent position), malignant tumors, and traumatic injuries.

Our hand surgeons bring to bear the full range of modern therapeutic techniques from rehabilitation therapy to microsurgical techniques for reattachment of amputated fingers and hands from accidents. Some of the more familiar procedures include: arthritic reconstruction, microvascular reconstruction, nerve repair, closed reduction and fixation, tendon repair, and joint replacement.

We also have vast experience in treating trauma, utilizing sophisticated grafting techniques to cover exposed bone and injured soft issues. Plus our specialists use innovative strategies for transplantation of bone and soft tissue to treat bone tumors, routinely leading to saving the hand and preserving a high level of function.

Innovative Research

Part of our mission on the hand services at Montefiore is to participate in research studies that contribute to long-term benefits of patients. Currently we are studying the frequency of distal radius (wrist) fractures in order to utilize this information as a screening technique for osteoporosis, since many patients do not realize they have it. Our team is also on the forefront of investigation of treatment options for many common workplace repetitive use conditions. The team searches tirelessly for the best ways to treat the most common and the most unusual of hand conditions.
