Our residents benefit from one full day of protected didactic time per week.
Residents learn from lectures and seminars on multiple theoretical therapeutic approaches including supportive psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, trauma informed psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based psychotherapy
Our residents engage in weekly psychotherapy and psychopharmacology supervision throughout their training. Our residents receive supervision in multiple modalities of psychotherapy, including psychodynamic psychotherapy with psychoanalytic supervisors, weekly cognitive-behavioral therapy, group and family therapies. Weekly psychopharmacology supervision, as well as journal clubs, are led by departmental leaders.
Postgraduate training is available on all ACGME-accredited psychiatry subspecialties (child and adolescent, addiction, geriatric, consultation-liaison and forensic).

Our chair, Jonathan E. Alpert, MD PhD, is a nationally recognized clinician and researcher. He has received numerous recognitions for teaching, mentorship, and service from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Partners HealthCare, American Psychiatric Association, and Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance. His academic interests include innovative treatments for difficult to treat mood disorders, childhood onset depression, depression comorbid with other medical illnesses, multi-cultural mental health, drug-drug interactions, behavioral health integration, ethical issues in the conduct of human studies, and medical education, and is the author of over 200 publications. He joined Montefiore Einstein in April 2017 after 24 years at the Massachusetts General Hospital where he was Director of the Depression Clinical and Research Program and Associate Chief of Psychiatry responsible for outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services.

Our vice-chairman of education, Gary Kennedy, MD, has been president of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry and for more than 20 years has been listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America.”
Our chairman emeritus, T. Byram Karasu, MD, is the author or editor of more than 20 books, author or co-author of more than 100 papers, editorial board member of nine journals, editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Psychotherapy, and a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and he is listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America."
The division chief of our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry department, Audrey Walker, MD, pioneered the first child consultation-liaison fellowship training program in the nation.
Carol A. Bernstein, MD, is Professor and Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Wellbeing, Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science and Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health at the Montefiore Medical Center /Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Bernstein is a Past-President of the American Psychiatric Association and served the Association as Vice-President, Treasurer and Trustee-at-Large and as the chair of multiple committees. She is the recipient of the APA/NIMH Vestermark Award in Psychiatric Education and the APA Alexandra Symonds Award for contributions to the advancement of women in leadership and in women’s health.
Our faculty are leaders in psychiatric education and healthcare delivery, and mentor our residents as they publish and present at national and international conferences.
Our Department of Psychiatry has multiple areas for research opportunities. Dr Eric Hollander does research in obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism spectrum disorders. Dr Vilma Gabbay is involved in research on the neurological and immunological mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of mood disorders in youth. Dr Barbara Milrod is the Director of Psychotherapy Research, who is a psychoanalysis and researcher of studying psychodynamic psychotherapy for treatment of PTSD.
Our focus on integrated, community-based care means our patients receive the best possible targeted and comprehensive treatment, and our residents learn about innovative and advanced methods of providing high-quality care.
Our school-based programs bring treatment to at-risk children and adolescents early in development.
We have a long history of partnering with public institutions to provide community-based care, from the Department of Health and Human Resources to public schools and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams.
Our program is well versed with community resources such as AccessVR, Bronxworks, and opportunities to visit community social organizations dedicated to supporting people with serious mental illness such as Fountain Club.
Our residency training program is proud to care for an underserved community in the Bronx, NY. Cultural and structural competency curriculum is provided throughout the four years of training. In partnership with the Montefiore Office of Community and Population Health, we provide education to community members and organizations about mental health and available resources.
Pioneering Programs
Our Adolescent Depression and Suicide program is a unique outpatient program tailored to people age 12 through 20 and utilizing individual, family and group therapy and psychopharmacological intervention to specifically serve depressed and suicidal adolescents and their families.
Our robust and long-standing addiction program—one of the largest in the country—encompasses a methadone treatment program that also provides primary care services and HIV special care as well as a multimodal outpatient substance abuse treatment intervention.
Montefiore's experience coordinating care for patients across multiple care settings led to its designation by Medicare in 2011 as a Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO)—one of only 32 organizations in the nation and the only one in New York State.
Montefiore is uniquely positioned to provide expert training in trauma informed care. Given the unique history of the Bronx, including the Bronx fires, social inequity, and health disparities, trauma has had a significant impact on the community. We would like to celebrate the many wonderful trauma-informed efforts across the department focused on helping our community heal.
ACUTE Psychiatry - providing immediate outpatient services to patients recently discharged from the psychiatric emergency room and inpatient services in order to increase access to care
Reproductive Psychiatry - E-consult outpatient consultation service to assist in providing evidence-based care to women of reproductive age in the Bronx
Trauma Healing and Resilience in Vulnerable Environments (THRIVE) is a specialty clinic housed within the Moses Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Department, dedicated to providing evidence-based therapy for trauma-related disorders. THRIVE offers trainees opportunities to conduct comprehensive trauma assessments, make stage-based, individualized treatment recommendations, and provide psychoeducation regarding treatment options to patients and families.
REACH - Racial, Ethnic and Cultural Healing - Group therapy in our outpatient clinic that offers a safe space where racially diverse young adults can discuss challenges pertaining to issues of racism and racial identity with other young people and also learn skills to navigate these life hurdles.
Arts and Integrative Medicine includes using motion and the arts to help heal the children and adolescents of our Bronx community
OnTrack New York Program- A first-episode psychosis program that provides individual therapy and psychopharmacological interventions, as well as groups, vocational and rehabilitation services and family therapy to patients recently diagnosed with psychosis.

Interventional Psychiatry Programs at Montefiore Behavioral Health Center, providing TMS and esketamine in an outpatient basis, as well as opportunities to learn about ECT in our inpatient psychiatry unit at Montefiore Moses Division.
