The objective of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program is to educate and train physicians to be skillful and adept at the practice and art of radiation oncology as well as caring and compassionate in the treatment of their patients. This goal will be accomplished by developing competency in the six areas of competency defined by the ACGME:
Medical Knowledge: obtained during each clinical rotation and via a lecture series offered through the radiation oncology department
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement: the ability to analyze practice performance and carry out needed improvements; locate and apply scientific evidence to the care of patients; assimilate and critically appraise scientific literature; use the computer to support learning and patient care; and facilitate the learning of other health care professions. These skills are acquired during research meetings, journal clubs, M&M conferences, Q/A conferences and practiced during the research rotation. Residents will learn to apply this new knowledge to their practice of radiation oncology and therefore change/improve the care that their own practice and our specialty can provide to the patient.
Professionalism: demonstrate integrity and honesty; accept responsibility; act in the best interest of the patient; and act in an ethical fashion with sensitivity to the patient's needs, disabilities, age, ethnicity and diverse patient population present here in the Bronx.
System-Based Practice: residents will learn interdependencies in the health care system particularity in how our specialty interacts/relates with other specialties, when we should encourage other specialties to consult us, when we should consult other specialists, and how to integrate radiation treatments with other treatment modalities. Additionally, since delivery of radiation requires radiation technology and medical physics, personal residents will also learn about interaction with these allied health professionals. Residents will also interact with the social worker in order to gain knowledge and sensitivity of oncology patients' special needs. Residents will learn to provide cost-effective care and deliver/advocate for quality patient care.
Patient Care: gathering data, ordering diagnostic tests, interpreting data, making decisions, performing procedures and managing patient care that effectively treats the patient in a compassionate appropriate manner will be delivered.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills: by performing history/physicals on patients; communicating their findings to the patient, family members and other health care professionals; and making treatment recommendations, residents will learn to ommunicate effectively and develop a relationship with the patient and their family.
Rotations
Radiation Oncology residents at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine rotate through Montefiore Medical Center (a hospital-based department) and the Montefiore Center for Radiation Therapy (a free-standing, outpatient center).
Residents will have four, three-month rotations per year. Each resident is paired with one attending per rotation. During each rotation, residents will participate in all the clinical and academic activities of the attending. This includes clinic, multidisciplinary tumor boards, lectures, and conferences. Additional Learning Experiences
Because we believe that residents should be exposed to as much learning as possible, the Department of Radiation Oncology also holds multidisciplinary conferences including breast, gynecologic oncology, head and neck, neuro-oncology, pulmonary, pediatrics and urology. In addition, we offer annual physics and radiobiology courses.
Benefits
Housing Reduced rate housing is available. Apartments are normally offered for occupancy as they become vacant; upon acceptance into the program, residents can speak with Montefiore's housing manager to check housing availability.
Vacation Each resident is offered four weeks of paid vacation per contract year.
How to Apply
Our Radiation Oncology Residency Program is four-year accredited leading to board eligibility in Radiation Oncology. Applications are accepted via ERAS only and interviews are conducted December through February. Once a candidate matches our program, we will begin the credentialing process.
