Schwartz Center Rounds

Schwartz Center Rounds® help caregivers and patients connect

Schwartz Center Rounds is a multidisciplinary forum where caregivers discuss difficult emotional and social issues that arise in caring for patients. Over 50,000 clinicians at nearly 200 sites in 31 states across the country participate in these interactive discussions. According to a study by the Goodman Research Group, caregivers who participated in Schwartz Center Rounds reported increased insight into the non-clinical aspects of patient care, improved teamwork among co-workers and greater support for their efforts to provide patient care.

In conjunction with The Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, Montefiore Medical Center has implemented the Rounds for staff to improve overall oncology healthcare delivery. Spearheaded at Montefiore by Jeffrey Weiss, MD, Shalom Kalnicki MD, and Alyson Moadel, PhD, the Rounds are guided by a planning committee including physicians, nurses, bioethicists, as well as a customer service representative and psychologist, and others who discuss pertinent topics and cases for upcoming rounds

Every other month, a panel of healthcare professionals hosts discussions on important emotional and social issues related to patient care. The panel, which includes up to three different members of the healthcare team including physicians, nurses, bio-ethicists and administrative staff, among others, presents a case with facilitation by a psychologist who engages the active participation of attendees. The open forum enables peers from many health disciplines to openly address challenges to patient care and discuss suggested solutions.

Based on the guidelines of the Kenneth B. Schwartz Center, after two years of successful forums at Montefiore, Continuing Medical Education accreditation is likely to be granted. More information about the Schwartz Center can be found at https://www.theschwartzcenter.org/.

Caregivers can actively contribute to forum topics. We welcome caregivers who work with cancer patients to submit case studies or ideas. Proposal submissions and requests for arranging rounds on another Montefiore campus should be emailed to: Cindy Vaca at CVACA@montefiore.org.

Upcoming Schwartz Center Rounds will occur on a bi-monthly basis in the Moses 2 Conference Room. Please contact Cindy Vaca at 718-920-2300 for a schedule of upcoming Rounds.
