Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)

At Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is used to deliver radiation to a tumor using special equipment to position patients with precise accuracy.

SBRT is used for treating tumors that are present in the body, outside the brain and spinal cord. SBRT is suited for treating small isolated tumors in the organs such as cancers in the liver or lungs. These tumors are more difficult to target accurately since they are more likely to move along with the normal motion of the body. Therefore, the total radiation dosage is divided into smaller doses which are given over several days in order to avoid damaging normal tissue with a single high dose of radiation.
