New Site Staffed by Montefiore Specialists in Adult and Pediatric Ophthalmology

BRONX, NY (September 14, 2011) - Comprehensive eye and vision care for adults and children is now available at a new full-service ophthalmology practice at Montefiore Medical Center's North Division. 

Staffed by board-certified ophthalmologists from Montefiore's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, including specialists in pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, cornea, retina and uveitis, refractive surgery, and oculoplastic surgery, the new 5,000-square-foot practice features spacious exam and treatment rooms and has the capacity to accommodate approximately 200 patient visits a day. It is fully equipped with the latest state-of-the-art technology and equipment for diagnosis and treatment of virtually any eye disease or condition.

Montefiore ophthalmologists now seeing patients at the new practice include Jocelyn Kuryan, MD, specialist in corneal disorders and comprehensive ophthalmology; Ilana Friedman, MD and Rachel Bloom, MD, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus; David Gritz, MD, MPH, cornea, uveitis, and refractive surgery; Irena Tsui, MD and Umar Mian, MD, vitreoretinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and retinal detachments; Robert Schwarcz, MD, oculoplastic surgery to repair deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, orbit (bony socket) and the adjacent face; and Melissa Yao, MD, glaucoma.

The North Division practice is the newest full-service satellite location opened by Montefiore's Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Additional satellite offices are located in Scarsdale and Yonkers, and throughout the Bronx.

As one of the largest ophthalmology departments in the country, Montefiore has 29 full-time faculty, nationally recognized researchers with 13 NIH grants, and award-winning community service programs to prevent blindness. In partnership with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore is a longstanding educational institution in the field of ophthalmology, teaching and training many of the nation's finest ophthalmologists.
