College of Medicine and Medical Centers Align to Increase Expertise

NEW YORK (February 26, 2013) – Maimonides Medical Center, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, and Montefiore Medical Center today announced their unique collaborative relationships.  Maimonides and Einstein signed an affiliation agreement with the goal of advancing medical education and research. Under terms of this agreement, Maimonides will become a University Hospital and the Brooklyn Campus of Einstein.

“These agreements build upon current relationships and better positions Maimonides for future success,” said Pamela Brier, president and CEO of Maimonides. “As Einstein’s Brooklyn Campus, we will strengthen our teaching programs and fortify physician recruitment. As a strategic partner with Montefiore, we will better prepare for new models of health care delivery.”

The enhanced academic affiliation with Einstein will provide its students with educational and clinical clerkships at Maimonides in all core hospital programs. Maimonides physicians who teach and supervise students will receive faculty appointments at Einstein, and participate on faculty committees and in faculty development programs. Additionally, two trustees from each institution will serve on each other’s boards.

"Maimonides Medical Center offers a superb environment for training Einstein students to become the competent and compassionate physicians the health care system of the future demands,” said Allen M. Spiegel, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “The partnership between Einstein and Maimonides will make two outstanding institutions even stronger."

Separately, Montefiore, the University Hospital and Academic Medical Center for Einstein, and Maimonides entered into a strategic alliance to leverage the strengths of both institutions.  The alliance of Montefiore and Maimonides will allow the two institutions to work together to establish programs of clinical excellence, expand research capabilities and ensure that all patients have access to the full range of clinical services - from primary care to advanced specialty care.

Montefiore provides advanced subspecialty care through the Montefiore-Einstein Centers of Excellence and has broad expertise in care coordination and integrated care delivery in a way that effectively manages financial risk. Maimonides is a regional center of excellence and a leader in integrating behavioral and physical health care for patients with serious mental illness through care management and a robust IT platform. The strategic alliance will capitalize on the strengths of each institution and allow both to better prepare for new models of health care delivery in the future.

“Our agreement with Maimonides is based on common values and a shared commitment to provide patients with less fragmented, improved care,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., president and CEO of Montefiore. “The healthcare system as a whole is facing many challenges.  We must grow and learn together in order to continue to improve patient care and outcomes.”
