Cancer Diagnosis and Staging

At Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, our patients benefit from crucial advancements in the field of diagnosis. We use the most advanced laboratory and imaging tools available to diagnose and stage cancer, including highly sophisticated, state-of-the-art fusion scans that combine the technology of CAT scans, and MRI and PET scans to assess accurately the extent of tumors before and after treatment. We also use intra-operative imaging techniques to assess tumors with more certainty during surgery and adjust our treatment accordingly, if necessary.

These new technologies, both through lab and imaging tests, provide us with a previously unattainable wealth and accuracy of information that maximizes the effectiveness of our treatments.

Laboratory

With a large staff and more than 50 pathologists and doctoral researchers, our laboratories generate over 10 million laboratory test results, interpretations and diagnostic consultations each year. Learn more about how we provide the most accurate results.

Imaging

When symptoms suggest cancer, your physician may request diagnostic procedures that include imaging tests to help positively diagnose the disease.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

A non-invasive procedure that produces a two-dimensional view of an internal organ or structure, especially the brain and spinal cord. The MRI may show abnormal nodules in bones or lymph nodes - a sign that cancer may be spreading. Learn more about the benefits of an MRI.

4D/PET CT Scanning

4D CT scanning is an advanced technology used by Montefiore cancer physicians to increase the accuracy of radiation treatment and decrease unnecessary radiation exposure. Read more about this advanced scanning technology here.
