Ways to Give
A Beefsteak is a time-honored New York culinary experience celebrating the pleasure and camaraderie of communal dining. Similar to the New England Clambake or a Texas Barbecue, this richly historic event is an opportunity to throw formality out the window and enjoy food and song in the company of family and friends. Dating back to the mid-nineteenth century, butchers working in the slaughterhouses of lower Manhattan would sneak choice cuts of meat away with them after their shifts had ended, taking them to kitchens of nearby saloons to be grilled over charcoal and served to all in attendance for a night on the town. Standard dining etiquette rules – the use of knives, forks, napkins, tablecloths – even plates – became entirely optional. The Beefsteak became a place to gather a community, often around a political cause or fundraiser to enact change.
Now in its eighth year, the annual Montefiore Beefsteak event is an opportunity to bring together associates, leadership and supporters of the hospital to enjoy an engaging evening of culinary excellence, while learning more about the important work taking place within the Montefiore community. This year’s event will benefit the Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care, whose mission is to bring together international experts with the latest technologies and pioneering research to advance the front lines of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of rare and common cancers.
