Richard N. Kitsis MD, Chief Division of Cardiology

Richard N. Kitsis, MD, has been at Montefiore since 1987. His career spans diverse areas including research, teaching, clinical care, the application of advanced technologies and the improvement of healthcare delivery.

Dr. Kitsis is a world-renowned researcher in the biology and medicine of cell death. His work has led to key insights that are being used to develop novel treatments for myocardial infarction and heart failure, the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States and other developed countries. “Fundamental research has the potential to provide entirely new therapies for common diseases. The hope is to decrease mortality and improve the quality of people’s lives,” says Dr. Kitsis. As chief of the Division of Cardiology, Dr. Kitsis strives to enhance the quality and scope of cardiovascular services at Montefiore, as well as to improve their efficiency, accessibility and functionality.

Dr. Kitsis, a summa cum laude graduate of Harvard University, received his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. He carried out his internal medicine internship, residency and chief residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston VA Medical Center, and obtained a cardiology fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center. He also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in molecular biology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
